Liga MX will have three champions per year

Mikel Arriolapresident of Liga MX, announced that to improve the level of Mexican soccer, long tournaments are back… But not as they were played before.

The manager indicated that from the 2023-24 season there will be three champions in the mexican soccer:

  • The champion of the Opening 2023.
  • The champion of the Clausura 2024.
  • In addition to the champion of the 2023-2024 season, who will be the one who accumulates the most points in the two tournaments.

But this champion will have no other prize than the satisfaction of having added more units than anyone else, and a prize from the sponsors. Nothing more.

“There has been a lot of discussion about long and short tournaments,” said Mikel Arriola, president of the Liga MX.

This proposal, deepened: “Add the virtues of both. There will be Liguillas champions and the champion of the year. There will be a new title that will reward the continuity of the projects. Put an end to ‘short-termism’. That implies more spaces and confidence for the Mexican players”.

He tried to explain: “It is not a modification to how the tournament is played today. Are two Leagues, but you are also going to reward the champion of the whole year. For the purposes of doing so, you take the points from both tournaments”.

But this tournament, the one of the sum of points, does not go to the historical table of champions. This tournament does not mean that the team that achieves it wins a pass to a international tournament.

Only the satisfaction of scoring more points in the football yearnothing more.
