Seventeen years after his death, Hazes senior is still extremely popular. And commercially interesting, as it turns out. After a book, film, musical, Lidl now comes with a true clothing line of the folk singer.

The line was released together with Rachel Hazes – widow of the folk singer. “Rachel himself approached us with this idea. And we were immediately enthusiastic,” says a spokesperson for the supermarket.
“Hazes and Lidl fit together. Hazes is a man of the people and so are we as Lidl. Hazes fans also come to our stores.”

Bath towels and kites
The bath towels, kites and beer bags with the original song lyrics by Hazes will be available in the 437 branches from 30 June. “There are also hoodies, pants, shirts and real bathrobes with the recognizable silhouette,” says the spokesperson.
It is of course a smart way of making money. Because everything around the country’s most famous folk singer guarantees success. “But we do this mainly out of tribute to the folk singer.”
June 30 is the 70th birthday of the folk singer. “That’s why the stuff is in our stores from that moment on.”

Livelier than ever
Hazes is more alive than ever after his death, says René van Beeten. The Hazes impersonator has been performing since 1999. “I sing at company parties, birthdays and student parties. They want to hear his songs everywhere. And they are sung along wholeheartedly everywhere. That man is really a legend,” says the Hazes impersonator.

What does the Hazes fan think of the new clothing line? “I had to blink a few times when I saw the slippers and bathrobe,” admits Van Beeten.
“Of course companies want to make money and his popularity is used for that. But I also see it as an honor. And proof that André is still very popular. And rightly so. His songs continue to touch you.”

Already have everything
Or Van Beeten lies down in front of the local Lidl to get a Hazes bathrobe or hat? “I don’t think so. I don’t really see myself walking into it.” Moreover: “I already have a whole collection of leather jackets and hats for my performances. Very nice stuff and believe me: those things are more expensive than the items that Lidl has.”
