After years of spitting out one mid-range phone after another – even if they are regularly ranked as the best in the group – LG is finally turning to the flagship segment. And he hopes to do so with a bang, a new design language, and redesigned specifications included.
Having already shown part of the design of the phone, the company revealed this week the name of the phone on which it places its hopes: Velvet. The name, he says, “is meant to evoke images of lustrous softness and premium softness, two key features of the new phone. “
It will also mark a departure for the company’s global naming scheme for its phones, “moving away from alphanumeric designations in favor of familiar and expressive names.”

Along with a new name, the phone will also be the poster for a new design language that the company hopes to implement for all of its future phones, inspired by the natural world. The rear camera, for example, will feature what LG calls a “raindrop” design.
LG hopes this unique design will set the phone apart from the deluge of phones with huge bumps on the back. The company also displays what it calls a “symmetrical and fluid form factor that is both pleasing to the eye and pleasing to the touch.” Basically, the back of the phone will have a curve similar to that of the “cascading display” on the front.
However, little else is known about the phone. There is no release date or price, and the phone may not be a “real” flagship either, after all. Some reports suggest that the phone will only come with a Snapdragon 765, not a Snapdragon 865, leaving us to wonder if – and when – we will see this new design language associated with Qualcomm’s high-end SoC.
