Levits: Too many people die on the water due to stupidity and carelessness

Today, Levits met with the founder of the association “Swim Safely” Zani Gemze and the president of the Latvian Swimming Federation Aivars Platonovs to discuss the dramatic situation that has arisen when people lose their lives resting on the water.

At present, Latvia ranks first in the European Union in terms of the number of fatalities on the water. The conversation took place in the camp “Ikšķile beach” organized by the association “Swim safely” with the aim to draw the attention of various responsible institutions and also the whole society to the need for change. The President noted that he would also draw the attention of officials to this issue by discussing it first with the Prime Minister.

After the meeting, the President called on schools, local governments and ministries to ensure that children learn swimming skills at school. In his opinion, it is extremely important to understand what safe swimming means from an early age. The president also appealed to families, calling for caution and care for each other.

“Dear parents, watch your children even if everything seems to be in order, everything is as if safe. And, dear children, if you think that your parents are doing wrong, recklessly, reprimand them! I invite everyone to relax this summer from the heart, but to swim safely, “stressed the president.

Gemze, the founder of the association “Swim Safely”, emphasized that the life of every person is important for Latvia. The association, together with the president, calls on people to be sensible and prudent when relaxing in the summer.

“Don’t go into the water fast, don’t jump on your head, look after your loved ones and always go swimming with someone. Choose to swim on the well-maintained beaches and do not swim in storm, rain and storm or at night. Let’s be safe in summer will help save lives, “stressed Gemze.

In his turn, the President of the Latvian Swimming Federation Platonov drew attention to the need for a complex solution to the problem. He emphasized that the tragic situation in the field of human safety on water was a national issue. Platonov pointed out that improvements are possible by actively working together – public administration, responsible institutions, non-governmental organizations, as well as everyone individually.

“A serious step in improving the situation is full understanding at all levels of state and local government, and – more importantly – strong political will to implement concrete actions. Every inhabitant of Latvia must learn water competence at school to rest safely near the water,” stressed the Latvian Swimming Federation. the president.

The President’s Chancellery pointed out that in the “Safe to swim” camp, children get to know the differences in the environment in the swimming pool and river, learn to know the safe depth and personal boundaries of the bathing area, as well as learn how to use personal safety equipment properly.
