BREISACH OUTDOOR GALLERY

Original beauty of the historic walls
For the article “Art in Public Space” in the Badische Zeitung on Wednesday, August 25, we received the following reader’s letter:

It is regrettable that the special charisma of the historic Breisach walls is impaired by the open-air gallery campaign – walls that in part go back to Roman times and were extensively restored a few years ago. In a comparable case, the monument office found that these walls, in their beauty, should be left to their own devices. Incidentally, it is questionable whether the not always successful works of art can convey art to both locals and visitors in this way. Every art, whether old or modern, needs the appropriate environment in order to be able to be grasped in its message.

I would like to deliberately exclude from my criticism the pictures of Mr. Falkner, who gave an informative impression of the medieval life in our city with his wall paintings. I also find the Lyrikweg around Eckartsberg to be an enrichment. In contrast to the sometimes noisy, artistic works in the open-air gallery, the boards with their texts fit harmoniously into the whole. I have the hope that the historical walls, valuable cultural monument of the cathedral city, will be restored to their original beauty.Renate Schumacher, Breisach
