“Let the children on the pitch” – Sports Commissioner VG Kirchen on Corona restrictions

News from 05/14/2021

Currently, a maximum of five children are allowed to do sports together outdoors. Over 15-year-olds are outside. The sports officer of the community of Kirchen Griese clearly criticizes these restrictions. He is encouraged in his judgment by on-site impressions and discussions with those responsible for the club.

Among other things, the sports officer of the Kirchen association, Klaus-Jrgen Griese, visited a training session for the young footballers of the JSG Mudersbach-Brachbach to get an idea of the situation. (Photos: Griese / Archive)

Verbandsgemeinde Kirchen / Region. Contactless group sport for children in the open air is possible again, but only with considerable restrictions. This is clearly criticized by the sports commissioner of the churches association, Klaus-Jrgen Griese. He has watched training sessions with children who love to play, and has visited the JSG Mudersbach / Brachbach or the JSG Siegtal / Heller in Kirchen.

His observations lead him to a gloomy conclusion: You can’t separate athletes from one another, because some have bright children’s eyes, others look sad. The 14- and 15-year-olds who do school sports together must, in his opinion, also be able to train together in the training units. At the moment, the 15-year-olds would have to stand around the railing or stay at home.

In the games he observed, the rules according to the Corona Control Ordinance of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and the general decree of the Altenkirchen district were implemented and complied with. He also refers to expert assessments, according to which infections do not take place outdoors, but 99.9 percent indoors. The risk of infection outdoors or on sports fields is correspondingly low.

He is supported by several club officials with whom he spoke. The youth trainer of the JSG Mudersbach-Brachbach Anke Pfeifer, for example, demands that those responsible for the restrictions should take a look at what joy the children get from doing sports together and what importance the togetherness has for them.

Jens He, the youth department head of JSG Siegtal-Heller, said: Children cannot be locked up. Our youth trainers and supervisors face an unimaginable challenge because they accompany around 230 children and young people. The younger athletes would suffer massively from the existing restrictions. He also fears a decline in the level of performance.

Sports officer Griese also refers to the huge organizational challenges associated with complying with the Corona requirements. Against this background, he pays his greatest respect to all those responsible for the club and coaches, who nevertheless tackle and implement it for the benefit of the children. His conclusion is in any case: let the children on the pitch. (Daniel Pirker / PM)

Background:

For districts such as Altenkirchen, where the seven-day incidence is over 100, contactless outdoor group sport is possible for children, but only if they are under 15 years of age. In addition, no more than five people are allowed to participate. At least this restriction would be extended to up to 20 children if the district was below an incidence value of 100. The age limit would, however, continue to apply.
