Let 3’s Controversial Eurovision Entry: “Mama ŠČ” Targets Putin, Features Political Jabs and Sexual Stunts

No Eurovision year is without controversy. The biggest controversy of all is probably the Croatian band Let 3, who perform with the song “Mama ŠČ”.

The band, who are super popular in the Baltic countries, constantly come up with political jabs in all directions. This year, it is Russia who gets to drive.

– The shock-rock band Let 3 is incredibly well-known throughout the Balkans for its provocative, avant-garde performances. For “Eurovision”, they have entered into a thinly veiled attack against Vladimir Putin, who is probably testing “Eurovision’s” ban on political texts to the limit, writes BBCand continues:

– The “mama” in the title refers to “mother Russia”, and the mustachioed frontman Damir Martinović repeatedly sings “Mama kissed a moron”. This is apparently criticism of Russia’s political class, for their continued support of Putin’s regime.

SMALL HINTS EVERYWHERE: The “tractor” is believed to refer to the relationship between Belarus’s President Alexander Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In October, Lukashekno gave a tractor for Putin’s 70th birthday. The band often poses with a tractor, as in the picture. In the lyrics of “Mama ŠČ” it also says that “mama bought a tractor”. In an interview with TV 2, Alessandra Mele explains what she thinks about the political focus.

– “Eurovision” is not a political competition, but unfortunately politics is everywhere. Hopefully one doesn’t focus on that. The slogan is “united by music”, and that is what we will focus on.

Group sex and cloves in the ass

Let 3 have also stated that they want to have group sex with Joker Out, which is Serbia’s entry to the Eurovision Song Contest. It also says that they “might have to stick cloves up their asses”.

The band members took over Twitter to explain that they were not offended by the move, after Let 3 received a lot of heat. Joker Out also said the following about the somewhat unusual request to the newspaper Liverpool Echo:

– We have definitely heard of Let 3, and we have a kind of respect for them, even though they are very crazy. The only real interaction we had with them is that they said in an interview that they wanted to do some… things… with us, we should give them flowers.

TV 2 met Let 3 in Liverpool during Sunday’s red carpet event. They did not want to talk about politics, but did comment on the sex request.

Watch the video below to hear them talk about this, as well as show a vulgar dance:

Showed masturbation in music video

This is far from the first scandal caused by the boy band. In 2005, they came up with a relatively original form of political satire, when they made a music video where several extras masturbated in Serbian and Albanian uniforms.

The music video belonged to the song “Rado ide Srbin u vojjike (Pička)”, which has been given the English translation “The Serb gladly enlists in the army (Cunt)”.

To Morning, which is one of Croatia’s largest online newspapers, the band explained that the album accompanying the song was about “what people fear most – peasantry and pornography”. The same album also includes the song “Kurcem u Čelo”, which in Norwegian translates to “cock in the forehead”.

Due to the international interest that comes with the “Eurovision” circus, many are now discussing this masturbation stunt. This despite the fact that the video is almost impossible to track down on the internet and that the incident happened many years ago.

With that said, they’ve done enough stunts between 2005 and now to make them hard to forget. The world’s largest independent Eurovision blog, Wiwibloggs, writes that the band was fined by the police in 2008. Why? They performed naked during an outdoor concert.

Don’t want that kind of focus

Mele is asked a question about his unorthodox competitors, who mix politics with sexual stunts.

– There are several controversial artists this year, including Let 3, who have Putin jabs on stage and who have previously shown masturbation in a music video with military uniforms. There will be a lot of focus on it, what do you think about it?

– I think that my song, “Queen of Kings”, should not focus on that. Then the others can do what they want.

Tips?

TV 2 is present in Liverpool throughout Eurovision week, from Sunday 7 May to Sunday 14 May.

If you have a “Eurovision” tip or input, send it to [email protected].

Mele and Let 3 meet in the first semi-final, which will be broadcast on Tuesday 9 May. If both go on from there, they will meet again in the “Eurovision Song Contest” final on 13 May.

TV 2 met Mele just before she left for Liverpool. Watch the interview below, where she reveals several changes. She also says what it takes to win.
