Because of the corona pandemic, many Germans have given up their Easter vacation in the south in the past two years. Traffic is comparatively quiet at the beginning of the holidays this year as well.

Munich – At the beginning of the Easter holidays, fewer vacationers apparently drove south on Bavaria’s autobahns this spring than in the years before the pandemic. An official from the Holzkirchen motorway police said on Saturday that travel was not as heavy as it was before the Corona crisis. Despite snowfall on Saturday night, nothing dramatic happened because the snow didn’t stay long.

The highway police in Memmingen said there was a lot of traffic going south, but the big avalanche was not there this year. Accordingly, there were no major traffic jams or accidents there either. The snow during the night had been cleared and did not cause any major chaos.

Overall, the ADAC expects significantly more holiday traffic for the Easter holidays than in the past two years, since there are hardly any corona restrictions: “Therefore, the traffic jam situation will be more tense than at the last two Easter holidays,” said the ADAC in Munich on request With.

The high fuel price should hardly affect visits to relatives, excursions and short trips. “Maundy Thursday was one of the five busiest days of the year in 2019, and this year too (April 14) commuters will be on their way home and drivers on their way to their families or relatives,” expects the ADAC. The club also expects a little more traffic on Easter Monday. On Easter Sunday, on the other hand, things should be quieter.

According to the ADAC, Easter vacationers should also allow for delays on the classic international routes: These include the West, Tauern and Brenner autobahns in Austria and the Gotthard route in Switzerland. dpa
