Les Rennes du Compost: three women collect recyclable waste from restaurants by tricycle

Biowaste is gradually becoming a national economic issue. Recovering and recycling its biodegradable and useful waste instead of incinerating it may seem obvious. However, recovery is not always easy, especially when you are a restoration professional.

In Rennes, three young women decide to come to their aid and make a gesture for the planet: they have just created the company ” Compost reindeer », And travel with a scooter to recover and recycle the waste of the city’s restaurateurs. An ecological and solidarity initiative to discover.

The Rennes du Compost in action

Currently in a participatory campaign on HelloAsso and therefore in the process of creation, the young company has several objectives:

  • Collect biowaste in soft mobility from professionals (traders, companies, etc.) and individuals in Rennes
  • Recover this bio-waste in compost, in a short circuit at the Rennes composting site
  • Redistribute or sell the compost on Rennes territory to professionals or individuals

The compost produced will have the NF U44-051 standard, guaranteeing authorized use in organic farming. Young entrepreneurs also want to create awareness workshops on composting and sorting waste.. The youngest people today will become the actors of tomorrow’s sorting, by doing it themselves. But they will also be the ones who pass it on to subsequent generations.

In two and a half months, Les Rennes du Compost already has a few “clients” who have made it possible to collect 3 tonnes of compostable waste. However, this success leads to a logistical problem for the young ladies: Rennes Métropole only offers biowaste collection once a week; they must therefore store their bio-waste in large containers. Which is not always easy in the city center …

In action, The Reindeers of Compost pass at the request of the restaurant owner with a totally ecological vehicle adapted to the traffic conditions of the Breton capital. The company is remunerated according to the frequency of requests and the quantities collected. A young French company to encourage!

Composting in the kitchen, yes it is possible

Compost your waste yourself: it is quite possible even when you do not have a garden: there are small kitchen composters which, with the help of a powder called “bran”, to obtain compost in 15 days. We had also tested the now famous Bokashi in 2019, to adopt it definitively.

As a reminder, compostable kitchen waste is fruit or vegetable peelings, but also eggshells, dairy products, leftover fish or meat, bread, coffee grounds with filter (or paper pods). Tea bags and tissues can also end up in the kitchen composter, but you can opt for vegetable waste-only compost.

Even this requires a certain organization and a little more space to place the composter, the interest is real: it has enabled us to considerably reduce our incinerable waste (of the order of 10 to 15 liters per week), and ” always have a natural fertilizer for the garden on hand.
