La Pulce: "Avevo paura di rivivere la situazione del 2021. Volevo lasciare l'Europa, allontanarmi dai riflettori e pensare di più alla mia famiglia"
In an exclusive interview with Mundo Deportivo and Sport, Leo Messi has announced his future: no return to Barcelona and a new adventure in MLS with the Inter Miami shirt at David Beckham. “The truth is that obviously I really wanted to return to Barça, I was very excited to be able to return, but, on the other hand, after experiencing what I experienced and the farewell I had, I didn’t want to be in the same situation again.: wait to see what would happen and leave my future in someone else’s hands, so to speak. I wanted to make my decision, thinking of myself, of my family – explained the Argentine champion -. Even though I heard that LaLiga was said to have accepted everything and everything was fine for my return, there were still many more things to do. I heard they had to sell players or lower player salaries and the truth is I didn’t want to go through that, or take the responsibility of getting anything to do with it. I’ve already been accused of so many things that weren’t true in my career at Barcelona and I was already a bit tired. I didn’t want to go through all this. When I left for the first time, LaLiga had also accepted that they would sign me up and in the end it couldn’t be done. Well, I was afraid the same thing would happen again. I wanted to make my decision and that’s why it’s been a while since I spoke to Barça. Although I would have liked to, it was not possible. I’m also in a moment where I want to think more about my family. As I said, I had two years at the family level that were so bad that I didn’t enjoy it. I’ve had a spectacular month after winning the World Championship, but other than that it’s been a difficult stage for me. I’ve decided I’m going to Miami. We are not 100% done yet and something is missing, but we have decided to continue the journey there“.
The farewell at the end of the summer of 2021 was too painful, a wound still open for how things went. “A bit yes, a bit yes… For not having been able to greet people as I would have liked. As I think I deserved. As the players I mentioned also deserved and did (Jordi Alba, Busquets, Iniesta or Xavi, ed.) I would have liked that. I had been portrayed as the villain in the movie and I didn’t really like that because that wasn’t the case. That’s why I would like to have a real goodbye at some point with the people I’ve lived, enjoyed and suffered with so much We have been together for many years and I would like to say goodbye as I deserve”.
Having discarded the Barcelona option, Messi has not taken into consideration other European teams. “I had offers from other European teams but I didn’t even evaluate them because my idea was to go to Barcelona. If it didn’t work out with Barcelona, I thought about leaving European football and thinking about what I needed. Ending my career as a this part and experience MLS in a different way and enjoy myself much more day by day, with the same responsibility of wanting to win and always do things well but with more peace of mind”.
On contacts with Barcelona in recent months. “Actually, I spoke very little with President Laporta, once or twice at the most. I communicated a lot with Xavi. We also talked about the possibility of my return. We were very excited, because when something came out we discussed whether he really wanted me to return, whether it was good for the team and for him, and we kept in touch.”
Harsh words, however, for PSG, where he spent two years with lights and shadows and was also loudly contested by the fans on several occasions. “I’m leaving with mixed feelings. The truth is that the first year was very difficult, as I’ve said before, for several reasons. The second year, in the first six months, I felt very, very good, very comfortable. comfortable in the club, in the city, with my family. In the middle there was the World Cup and I think the World Cup marked all the teams in general, it marked the season a little, with such an important competition in the middle for the first time. I think it affected the season a lot. I expected it to end differently, but hey, it’s been two years, which, in general, have been difficult for me, but they’re behind me.”
BARCELONA: “WE ARE WORKING FOR A TRIBUTE TO MESSI”
Following Messi’s announcement that he is joining MLS, Barcelona have issued a statement commenting on the former captain’s decision. “On Monday, June 5, Jorge Messi, the player’s father and representative, informed club president Joan Laporta of the player’s decision to move to Inter Miami, despite the fact that a proposal had been made by Barça, in view of both the desire Barcelona and Lionel Messi for his return to the Blaugrana.President Laporta understood and respected Messi’s decision to want to play in a less demanding league, farther from the spotlight and the pressures he has been subjected to in recent years. Joan Laporta and Jorge Messi have also agreed to work together to promote a fitting tribute from Barça fans to honor a footballer who was, is and always will be loved by Barça.”
