Swallowing lemon juice in the morning just after waking up has become the daily habit of some people. Why start the day with such a drink even before taking any food or drink? Health On the Net has investigated the matter for you.

Lemon juice in the morning is beneficial for health

To drink chilled or slightly warm, but in any case as soon as you wake up and before taking breakfast, lemon juice in the morning would according to some different health benefits:

  • Aid in weight loss, by activating digestion;
  • A detoxifying action to eliminate toxins from the body;
  • A preventive effect vis-à-vis the development of various chronic pathologies;
  • Anti-aging action by stimulating the brain;
  • A stimulating action on the immune system.

Lemon juice certainly has several nutritional benefits : its sugar content is reduced, it is very low in calories and it is rich in vitamins and mineral salts. However, to date, no scientific study has clearly demonstrated a significant health effect of consuming lemon juice in the morning. In any case, it does not present a health risk either.

Is it equivalent to other citrus juices?

While the health benefits of lemon juice in the morning aren’t clearly demonstrated, it’s not completely flawless either. Its apparent acidity can scare people with regular heartburn, while the citrates it contains actually have a buffering effect that reduces acidity. However, its consumption should remain limited in the event of recurrent gastric acidity, especially if lemon juice is taken without meals. Likewise, lemon juice is a source of acidity for the mouth, which can weaken tooth enamel and contribute to the development of dental caries. Faced with this problem, followers of morning lemon juice have several solutions:

  • Dilute the lemon juice widely to reduce its acidity;
  • Rinse your mouth after drinking it;
  • Use a straw to limit the contact of lemon juice with the oral cavity.

According to specialists, it is today impossible to determine if lemon juice is more interesting than another citrus juice or if it is more interesting taken on an empty stomach or during a meal.

The juice of a lemon as part of a healthy lifestyle

Without scientific proof of its possible therapeutic effects, it seems, however, that people who consume lemon juice in the morning upon waking up are also people who pay particular attention to their health, in particular:

  • A healthy and balanced diet;
  • Regular physical activity;
  • Little or no consumption of alcohol or tobacco.

These factors are scientifically recognized for their effects on health and which undoubtedly explain the benefits felt.

In conclusion, except for people prone to gastric reflux, taking a lemon juice every morning or by treatment of a few days does not present any risk for health and can be part of a global attention to his hygiene of life, thus contributing to preserve their health in the medium and long term.
