Demo Monday: Hundreds of people gather in and around Leipzig

Leipzig – On Monday it was all over again Saxony demonstrated against the current measures to protect against the corona virus. In Leipzig, numerous citizens reacted to this in the form of several counter-demonstrations.

Some participants in the demo call for “Leipzig takes a seat” gathered around the democracy bell in front of the opera.
Originally, 16 counter-demonstrations distributed throughout the city center were registered by the “Leipzig takes place” action alliance and other actors. These were under the motto “The end of patience – prevent the deployment of right-wing enemies of democracy”.
Ten participants were planned for the individual meetings in order to comply with the Corona Emergency Ordinance that is still in force.
Around 5.30 p.m. the first participants gathered around Augustusplatz, the demonstrators were accompanied by numerous police forces.

Like every Monday in the past few months, the supporters of the “Leipzig Movement” and “Leipzig 2021 Citizens’ Movement” can also be expected in the city center.

According to initial information, there had already been encounters between the Corona protesters and the counter-demonstrators early Monday evening, and an arrest is said to have already taken place.

Update, 7.30 p.m .: The police ended an unregistered meeting in Engelsdorf
As the Leipzig police reported on Twitter, the emergency services had to end a meeting with around 200 participants in the Engelsdorf district around 7 p.m. A meeting with around 25 participants was also prevented at the Nikolaikirchhof in the city center because it was not registered. These are said to have been demonstrators from the “Leipzig Movement”. The police recorded the identities of the participants.

Update, 8 p.m.: Meetings dissolve
According to initial projections, around 300 participants in the “Leipzig takes place” demos were there. From Augustusplatz, the demonstrators moved through the city and occasionally encountered small groups of the “Leipzig Movement” and “Leipzig 2021 Citizens’ Movement”.
Shortly before 8 p.m. the individual demos of “Leipzig takes place” broke up. With the exception of minor arguments, the events are said to have ended peacefully.

Update, 8:15 p.m .: Police report gatherings in the area around Leipzig
There were also meetings on Monday in the outskirts and surrounding area of Leipzig, including around 220 people on the market square in Liebertwolkwitz. The emergency services had to break up the unannounced demonstration.
An unofficial procession of around 45 people also formed in Grimma – the police officers stopped those who were running along.

Update, 8.30 p.m .: The demo was peaceful
As a police spokesman later confirmed to the German Press Agency, the demonstrations on Monday evening were generally peaceful. A small group of opponents of the measures was on site at Augustusplatz and there were “small emotions” with the participants of the “Leipzig takes place” meetings.
Monday evening was also a success for the action alliance. “Thank you to all initiatives, groups, parties and Co. for the diverse participation in the protest,” wrote “Leipzig takes place” on Twitter at the end.
