Leipzig: Lieferando drivers rebel against precarious working conditions

Drivers from the Lieferando food delivery service demonstrated in Leipzig on Monday for better working conditions.

Leipzig – “Riders unite, together we fight” – in Leipzig yesterday, Monday, drivers from the Lieferando food delivery service called for better working conditions demonstrated. The starting point was a process before the labor court.

Hundreds of them jet through Saxony’s major cities, delivering food in their orange jackets.

The Lieferando drivers are under massive pressure, says Lou Hauser from the Food, Enjoyment and Restaurants Union (NGG).

The fixed salary is currently only ten euros per hour. “There is a bonus system for completed rides – but that encourages the riders to go beyond their own limits,” says Hauser and speaks of “self-endangering behavior”, for example through frenzy.

The NGG is therefore demanding an hourly wage of 15 euros and an increase in holiday entitlement from four to six weeks.

Lieferando rejected the NGG criticism. A company spokesman explained that the employees were paid an average of more than 13 euros an hour in secure employment with holiday pay, continued pay and comprehensive insurance.

What the union also criticizes: Until now, drivers had to use their private mobile phones for delivery and were therefore subject to permanent location tracking (tracking) by the employer.

Only a judgment of the Federal Labor Court in November, which two employees fought for, now determines that the drivers are entitled to the provision of “essential work equipment” such as mobile phones and bicycles. Lieferando wants to implement this from March.

Several dozen riders demonstrated on Monday in front of the Leipzig labor court against their precarious working conditions and at the same time supported their colleague Philipp R. (18).

After his private cell phone broke and he had to postpone his shift, Lieferando simply fired him.
