The Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives approved, during its meeting, today, Sunday, Presidential Decree No. 362 of 2020 approving the sub-agreement between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Government of Canada regarding the implementation of a project to address gaps in health and reproductive rights in Egypt and signed in Cairo on March 17 2020.
The project aims to empower women and involve men in family planning, by raising awareness of family planning services in Egypt, facilitating access to these services, raising their level, and addressing social and behavioral difficulties faced by girls and women in obtaining quality health services.
The project includes many activities, including purchasing contraceptives, developing a distribution plan in the targeted areas, designing and publishing a comprehensive curriculum for education in the field of population and family planning, and organizing activities to raise awareness of the importance of national commitment to family planning.
The project is implemented – according to the explanatory note – by the United Nations Population Fund, “the implementing partner”, and upon completion of all project activities, the fund is committed to the priorities of the Ministry of Health and Population in this regard.
The Egyptian government cooperates with the Canadian government to support the initiation, implementation and follow-up of the project, and authorizes the Ministries of Health, Population, Youth and Sports to assume their implementation obligations. The Canadian government also makes a financial contribution to the project with a total value not exceeding 5 million Canadian dollars, over a period of 5 years.
The memorandum clarified that any disputes that may arise regarding the application or interpretation of the agreement are resolved amicably through negotiations between the Egyptian and Canadian governments.
