Legion Y740s-15IRH: Lenovo’s gaming notebook changes operating modes using the keyboard

Lenovo presented the gaming notebook Y740s-15IRH, a Coffee Lake H refresh with a 15.6-inch display, at the electronics fair CES 2020. The notebook is said to be available with different Intel processors and up to 32 GB RAM and up to 1 TB NVMe SSD storage.

As a special feature, the various performance modes can be changed directly via the keyboard: With the help of the Fn and Q keys, users can switch directly between normal mode, a performance mode for higher frame rates and a quiet mode for better battery life.

The IPS display has 60 Hz and a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 or 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. The higher resolution screen should reach a brightness of up to 600 cd / sqm, is Vesa-HDR-400 certified and supports Dolby Vision. The lower-resolution display is up to 300 cd / sqm bright, HDR does not support it.

Different Coffee Lake processors to choose from

Intel’s Core i5-9300H, Core i7-9750H and Core i9-9880H are available as processors (Coffee Lake Refresh). The DDR4 RAM holds either 16 or 32 GB, the NVMe SSD either 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB. The Legion Y740s does not have a dedicated graphics unit, but an external GPU can be connected via Thunderbolt. With the Legion Booststation, Lenovo offers a corresponding new device.

The Legion Y740s offers two USB 3.2 Gen3 ports, two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 3, Displayport 1.4 and USB 3.2 Gen2 support, an SD card reader and a headphone jack.

The notebook is 356 x 252 x 15 mm in size and weighs from 1.7 kg. The housing is made of aluminum, a fingerprint sensor is installed in the on switch. The battery has a capacity of 60 watt hours and should last for eight hours.

The Legion Y740s is expected to hit the stores in the second quarter of 2020. The price starts at 1,300 euros. The Legion boost station is said to cost 350 euros.
