Legendary Actress Oh Hyun-kyung Passes Away at 88 after Illness

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kang Ae-ran = Veteran actress Oh Hyun-kyung, who has been on stage for over 60 years, has passed away. She died at the age of 88.

According to the bereaved family on the 1st, Oh Hyun-kyung passed away this morning after suffering from a cerebral hemorrhage in August last year and suffering from illness at a nursing hospital.

The deceased began his acting career in 1954 when he was a sophomore at Seoul High School and participated in a theater class. The following year, he confirmed his talent as an actor by winning the male acting award at the National High School Drama Contest for ‘The God of Death’.

He graduated from the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Yonsei University and worked as a member of the Yonsei Dramatic Arts Research Society while attending school. After graduation, he appeared in numerous theater productions, including ‘The Marriage of Figaro’, ‘Mr. Maeng Jinsa’s Sergeant’, ‘Dongcheonhong’, and ‘Heosaengjeon’.

The deceased was a KBS 1st recruitment talent and opened the era of TV dramas in the 1960s. Many people remember him as an actor thanks to his popularity as Lee Jang-su in the drama ‘The Art of War’ (1987-1993).

Oh Hyun-kyung took a break from acting for a while after suffering from esophageal cancer and stomach cancer, but returned to the theater stage in 2008 and entered her ‘second heyday.’

In 2008, he won the Best Actor Award at the Seoul Theater Festival for his role as Choi Pal-yeong in the production ‘Heroine’ at the Seoul Theater Festival, and in 2009, he won the Best Actor Award at the Korea Theater Awards for his role as the father in ‘Spring Day’.

He did not leave the theater stage even before he collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage. In May of last year, she briefly appeared in the joint performance ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ put on by the Yonsei Dramatic Arts Research Association between alumni and current students. This work became Oh Hyun-kyung’s last staged work.

The deceased also won the Dong-A Theater Award for Best Supporting Actor (1966), the Baeksang Arts Award for Acting in a Play (1985), and the KBS Grand Prize (1992).

Survivors include daughter Oh Ji-hye, an actress, and son Oh Se-ho.

The mortuary is room 12 of the funeral hall at Severance Hospital in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. The funeral will be held on the 5th and the burial will be at Cheonan Park Cemetery.
