Leeuwarder receives a piggy bank in honor of his birth 77 years later

The 77-year-old Jes Wassenaar from Leeuwarden did not know what happened to him last week. His children gave him a piggy bank with his name, date of birth and place of birth, dating from 1943. He himself was not aware of the existence of the piggy bank.

A friend of his son-in-law discovered the piggy bank at a flea market in Lemmer. “He saw this piggy bank and thought: hey, Wassenaar, that name sounds familiar to me,” Wassenaar told Omrop Fryslân. After a phone call, that friend bought it and took it to Leeuwarden.

The gift was a big surprise for Wassenaar. “It must apply to me, there is almost nothing else you can do. You cannot tell me that someone with the same name was born on that same date in Sneek. It must have been intended for me, but I never heard from my parents about it. remains a mystery where this has been all those 77 years.”

spelling mistake

The only thing wrong is the spelling of his name on the piggy bank. “Officially my name is Jetze Jan, but here it is Jetse with an S. Understandable, because that is also common in Friesland,” says Wassenaar.

The Frisian still has many questions. “Who made this? Was it never given because of the misspelling?” He hopes to find out more about the piggy bank through an appeal on social media. “It’s a mystery. It would be nice if someone knew more about this.”
