Lee Nak-yeon, former leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, who has been predicting the creation of a new party, is expected to announce his withdrawal from the party within this week.

While the joining of incumbent members of the Democratic Party is not visible, interest is growing in the possibility of a ‘Big Tent’ in solidarity with the ‘New Party of Lee Jun-seok’ and the ‘New Party of Geum Tae-seop’.

Former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon visited the May 18 Democratic Cemetery in Gwangju and the grave of his late father in Yeonggwang, Jeollanam-do today.

“I have not yet been able to repay the debt I owe to Gwangju and Jeonnam,” he said, adding, “I will repay and leave even if I have to pour everything into it,” and announced his intention to leave the party this week.

″I guess I’ll have to say hello and ask for forgiveness later this week.″

The Democratic Party criticized former President Kim Dae-jung, who celebrated his 100th birthday yesterday, by saying that he also emphasized “opposition unity” during his lifetime.

″I believe that the division of the opposition party is outside the spirit of President Kim Dae-jung and also outside the spirit and values of the Democratic Party.″

Former Representative Lee Nak-yeon also refuted the claim by quoting one of former President Kim’s famous sayings, “A conscience without action is on the side of evil.”

″I think that not taking action even when you know that the current politics is wrong is being on the side of evil.″

No active Democratic Party lawmaker has yet announced his intention to join Lee Nak-yeon’s new party, which is expected to be launched next month.

However, the political world’s attention is focused on the possibility of solidarity with third zone forces that have already raised their flags, such as the ‘Lee Jun-seok New Party’.

Former Representative Lee Nak-yeon also said today, “I will cooperate with anyone who shares the same mindset in breaking the political structure monopolized by the two parties and providing new options to the people.”

Lee Jun-seok, former leader of the People Power Party, has also already hinted at the possibility of cooperation in various ways.

″It is also possible to hold elections in a loose alliance (with Lee Nak-yeon’s new party). In the case of constituencies, for example, running for office by merging political parties or running under one symbol… ″

As New Choice co-CEO Geum Tae-seop, in addition to former CEO Lee Nak-yeon and Lee Jun-seok, will attend the publication ceremony of Hope for Korea CEO Yang Hyang-ja, scheduled for the day after tomorrow, attention is being paid to what kind of rapport will be exchanged over the so-called ‘Big Tent’ plan.
