Lebanon’s Presidential Nomination: Progressive Socialist Party Ready to Consider Any Approved Candidate

A member of the “Democratic Gathering” bloc, Representative Wael Abu Faour, confirmed that the “Progressive Socialist” party is ready to consider the nomination of any figure for the presidency of the republic who meets the conditions of Arab adoption and is approved by the Christian blocs and does not represent a challenge to anyone.

In an interview with Al-Jadeed TV, today, Sunday, Abu Faour revealed that the Socialist Party had not received any new position from Saudi Arabia, neither negative nor positive, regarding the Lebanese presidential file, explaining that “the Kingdom is re-reading its position on the nomination of the head of the Marada Movement, Suleiman Franjieh, for the presidency of the Republic.” And he said: “All countries deal with the Lebanese file, and any president who will come must win Arab adoption. We are in constant contact with France and Saudi Arabia, and we stress the necessity of electing an inclusive and conciliatory president, but unfortunately each party wants a president who meets its interests.”

Abu Faour pointed out that the head of the Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt, stopped offering names for the presidency because the matter has become useless, considering that “there is selfishness among some political forces towards offering names.” He said: “I call for humility in the demands to reach a settlement, and the idea of Lebanonizing merit.” Presidential Council does not exist and there is no movement and internal debate.

In another context, Abu Faour called for “not dealing with the Syrian displacement file with the tension that is taking place today,” stressing the need to “not politicize the file.” He added: “The Syrian displacement is political, not security, and we do not have a plan to return the displaced to their country.”
