Lebanon Roads Crisis: Mayor Calls for Urgent Action

“Lebanon Debate”

The torrential rains that Lebanon witnessed in the past days caused collapses in more than one area of support walls for buildings and roads, and led to the disruption of major facilities and roads, as the Dahr al-Baydar International Road, known as the Beirut-Damascus Road, which connects Beirut and the coast to the interior Bekaa Valley, was closed and is known to be the economic artery. The main road linking Lebanon by land to the Arab countries through the crossing of a large number of trucks coming from abroad.

As a result of the closure of this road, trucks took the initiative to modify their route and finally took the Zahle-Tarshish road, awaiting the completion of maintenance work on the Dahr al-Baidar road, which exacerbated the crisis and caused a new crisis, as a result of the continuous passage of trucks on the main road in Northern Matn that connects Zahle-Tarshish with the coast. The text.

In this context, the mayor of Mtayleb, Paul Chedid, confirms to “Lebanon Debate” that “it is not possible to replace the international road from Beirut to the Bekaa, known as the Arab Highway, which connects the coast of Lebanon to the Arab countries with the Tarshish and Aintoura road, passing through Bikfaya, which is, as a result, a village road and unqualified.” For trucks to cross,” calling for “preventing trucks from crossing these roads in order to avoid any disaster.”

Hence, Shadid calls for “taking proactive measures before the major disaster occurs, especially since the Tarshish road has not been repaired for decades,” noting at the same time that “it would have been more effective to replace the Dahr al-Baydar road with an air bridge, especially since it is a normal procedure adopted by several countries.” .

For his part, the mayor of Qornet Shehwan, Jean-Pierre Jebara, refuses to “pass the large number of trucks on the Qornet Shehwan-Bikfaya road, because they are unqualified roads, especially if a truck suffers any malfunction, and this may lead to the closure of the road.”

Jebara calls for “the Dahr al-Baydar road to be dealt with immediately, and although he refuses to cut off livelihoods, he calls on the state and security forces to take the necessary measures given that the majority of truck drivers do not know these alternative routes that they take and do not know how dangerous it is.”

In turn, the mayor of Aintoura – Matn, Jean Khalil Azar, revealed that he “met with the Civil Defense and discussed the steps that could alleviate this crisis, as he praised the work of the police stations in the region by blocking the road in Atchaneh in front of trucks.”

Therefore, it has become necessary to find laws and controls that limit this phenomenon, and to monitor violations by preventing large trucks from crossing internal roads and streets in the middle of residential neighborhoods because this is unacceptable behavior for several reasons, the first of which is that the narrow roads and internal streets are not designated for trucks to drive on, and because the internal streets and areas Populated areas cannot tolerate any congestion or traffic congestion, which requires immediate action because the interest, health and safety of the citizen is more important than anything else.

It is noteworthy that the Traffic Control Room announced today that trucks were prohibited from traveling on the Bikfaya-Dhour Shweir main road towards Zahle from Ain Alaq due to snowfall and poor visibility.

In light of what is happening, we are indeed living in a very frightening reality because Lebanon’s roads are threatened with more slides in light of the rain that is currently falling, after the terrifying scene on the Wadi Shahrour road in the Baabda district, so that the heavy rains that have been falling since yesterday led to the road subsidence and the collapse of pillars. Electricity, which prompted residents to issue a call to officials to take preventive measures and protect the lives of citizens.
