Learn How to Make Natural Mosquito Repellent Spray Using Lemongrass: Training by KKN 10834 UNY Students in Dadapan, Sidoluhur, Godean, Sleman

SiJOGJA.COM: Students from KKN 10834 UNY in Dadapan, Sidoluhur, Godean, Sleman taught local residents how to make mosquito repellent spray. The students are Ham Ananta Baharudin, Arni Febriyanti, Annisa Ana Sabilla, Asnan Munandar, Labal Rahmandito, Dwi Nurkholifan, Rinta Dwi Anugra, Nanda Firman Hadi, Muhammad Minto Aji Shodiq and Indra Kurniawan.

According to the Head of the Dadapan KKN, Ham Ananta Baharudin, the training in making mosquito spray is to protect yourself from mosquito attacks, which can be done by using repellent or anti-mosquito. “Mosquitoes are one of the insects that carry many diseases to humans, such as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and Malaria. “This is very dangerous,” he said, Friday (29/9). The mosquito repellent they make does not use dangerous chemicals because it uses lemongrass as the main ingredient.

The person in charge of the training, Rinta Dwi Anugra, said that lemongrass is used as a natural mosquito repellent because it contains citronellol and geraniol which have repellent properties. “Apart from that, it also contains methyl heptenone, terpenes, terpenes-alcohol, organic acids, and especially citronellal as a mosquito spray,” said Rinta. The tools used are a knife, pan, stove, filter, basin and spray bottle as a container for mosquito repellent. Meanwhile, the only ingredients needed are lemongrass, water and ethanol or alcohol.

How to make it: Peel the lemongrass skin from the stem and rinse using clean water. The lemongrass is aired until dry and cut into small pieces at the stem. The lemongrass is then boiled in a ratio of 1:3 lemongrass to water for approximately 30 minutes until the lemongrass water remaining during the boiling process is approximately 1/3 of the initial amount of water. The lemongrass boiled water is filtered from the remaining lemongrass solids, after it has cooled it is then mixed with 70% ethanol. The ratio of ethanol to lemongrass boiled water is 3:1. Lemongrass mosquito repellent is then packaged in bottles.

Indra Kurniawan hopes that with this training the community will also be able to make their own anti-mosquito spray from lemongrass to reduce the danger of exposure to insecticides or other chemicals that are not good for health or the environment that come from anti-mosquito products that are widely available on the market.
