leaked technical file, the lightened version of the Series X is confirmed

The Xbox Series S, or Lockhart project, would exist on Microsoft premises. This version of the manufacturer’s next console would be devoid of a disk drive and also less powerful, according to information from The Verge.

The Xbox Series X will land at the end of the year. It might not happen alone, since a console without a disc player could accompany it. A maneuver that recalls that of Sony with its PS5 Digital Edition. However, there would be a major difference in Microsoft’s strategy compared to that of Sony: la Xbox Series S, or Lockhart, would be less powerful than his big sister.

Yesterday we mentioned the existence of a Lockart profile in the development kit (dubbed Dante) for the next Xbox, to help developers simulate the capabilities of the console. A new index which testifies to the supposed existence of the machine. The Verge goes even further today by giving its technical characteristics.

This mode offers 7.5 Go of RAM and a CPU at a lower frequency than that of the Series X, without more precision. The GPU would bring a performance of 4 Teraflops. For comparison, the Series X has 16 GB of RAM including 13 usable and a GPU of 12 Teraflops. So we have a console half as powerful.

Console or PC?

If Microsoft decides to release this less powerful console, it could be extremely interesting. For now, Sony is putting on a console with and without a disc player, but with similar characteristics. Microsoft could take its rival on the wrong foot and take inspiration from the PC world, with several configurations.

Thus, the Series X could be the flagship console, capable of the best. The Lockhart, or Series S, could be intended for smaller budgets, by offering a lower definition, such as 1080p, or even less fine graphics. Knowing that Microsoft has already experimented with different configurations with the Xbox One, which is available in high-end (X) and entry-level (S) versions, this strategy is far from being far-fetched.

In addition, the advantage of a less powerful console could allow Microsoft to win the price war with an unbeatable price for the entry-level machine: around 200 euros according to rumors.
