The foundation stone for a special building was laid in Hamburg’s Hafencity on Wednesday. The new Hamburg headquarters of the energy company Vattenfall is being built on Amerigo-Vespucci-Platz.

Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) said that Vattenfall was building one of the most modern and sustainable office buildings in Europe. Jürgen Bruns-Berentelgt, Managing Director of Hafencity GmbH, added: “This includes electromobility, no private parking spaces for cars, a largely energy-neutral building – free of fossil resource use.” There are a number of innovative elements. For example, a special ceiling construction saves up to 50 percent CO2 during construction – compared to conventional concrete ceilings.

Space for 1,300 Vatenfall employees

The “EDGE ElbSide” construction project should be completed in just under two years. The owner is then the insurance company HanseMerkur, the main tenant is Vattenfall. Vattenfall’s approximately 1,300 Hamburg employees will work on 80 percent of the area.
