The direct work duties of a detained official are directly related to the control of compliance with the legislation on the circulation of firearms and their ammunition.

In the course of procedural actions, a firearm-like object, essential components of weapons and ammunition-like objects were removed and sent for examination. During the proceedings, 21 boxes of alcohol without excise stamps of the Republic of Latvia were also seized, and its origin and storage purposes will also be investigated by the Internal Security Bureau within the framework of the initiated criminal proceedings.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated pursuant to Section 233, Paragraph two of the Criminal Law – On the manufacture, repair, acquisition, storage, carrying, transport, transfer, transfer or transfer of a firearm, essential components of a firearm, firearm ammunition, high-energy pneumatic weapon, explosive or blasting device. Such an offense is punishable by up to three years’ imprisonment or a temporary custodial sentence, or forced labor, or a fine.

IDB informed that in the first seven months of 2020 it has conducted pre-trial investigations in 146 criminal proceedings. The number of newly initiated criminal proceedings by the Office during this period has reached 39 criminal proceedings, and a significant part of them are related to serious and especially serious criminal offenses committed by public officials.

As part of the investigated criminal proceedings, IDB has detained 34 people in the first seven months of this year. Despite the pandemic that began this spring and the current summer and holiday season, public attention and initiative have not diminished, and between January and the end of July, the office has received and processed more than 820 applications from residents, IDB stressed.

The Office also notes that at the end of the year it will be five years since its establishment, during which time the criminal proceedings investigated by the IDB have become more extensive and complex, the efficiency of their investigations has significantly increased, more and more crimes are registered and the number of persons involved .

Since its establishment, IDB has been headed by Valters Mūrnieks, Head of the Internal Security Bureau.
