Latvijas Pasts unveils 4 million processing and sorting equipment / Article / LSM.lv

Latvijas Pasts has unveiled the first fully automated mail weighing, scanning, measuring and sorting equipment, concluding the implementation of the most ambitious investment project in the company in recent years, the company informed. The plant has cost 4 million euros.

As the volume of traditional postal items decreases, the share of small parcels and parcels in Latvijas Pasts increases. With the help of artificial intelligence, the new line will allow efficient processing of all types of postal items, being able to sort up to 6,000 items per hour and, in total, providing twice as fast processing of twice as many items with the existing manpower. People will be able to receive shipments faster and the workforce will be able to be diverted to more complex responsibilities.

With the help of artificial intelligence, the new device will ensure high-quality processing of shipments, faster circulation and more accurate data for payments, providing detailed information on the size and weight of the shipment.

“The purchase of the new sorting equipment is an important step to provide Latvian residents with convenient and in-demand postal services.

Purposeful, systemic development is the only way to be successful in an increasingly competitive environment. This is important both for Latvijas Pasts itself and in the context of the modernization of the country’s common communications infrastructure, ”emphasized Minister of Transport Tālis Linkaits (New Conservative Party).

Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, emphasized the changes that have taken place in recent years as e-commerce is gaining momentum. “Data exchange, speed of processing and delivery, diversity of places of issue are basic requirements for today’s consumer. In order to ensure them, human resources alone are no longer enough, a significant presence of artificial intelligence is required, ”said Vilcāns.

As the head of the company emphasized, the sorting equipment incorporates the latest and most modern technologies – artificial intelligence, which is learned every day when using the equipment.

Namely, the more the machine sorts the mail, the better it recognizes the different labels and their placement on the shipments, as well as the ways in which people write down addresses.

One of the most significant benefits is that the new sorting equipment will significantly reduce the time and human resources required to process a specific job. Consequently, Latvijas Pasts will not depend on the availability of these resources in situations where air traffic is uneven and, with a larger volume of items, the existing resources may not be sufficient to sort them within the quality standards and additional temporary staff will need to be attracted. With existing manpower, the new facility will handle twice as many shipments twice as fast.

The new equipment also has other valuable functions, for example, with its help Latvijas Pasts will be able to provide new additional services within the flow of transit items from China, as well as improve the quality of parcel network operation and delivery time.

The parcel processing and sorting line is the largest investment project of Latvijas Pasts in recent years. Its leading manufacturer is BlueCrest, one of the world’s leading developers of mail processing and service equipment and solutions.

The investment in the equipment reaches 4 million euros.

In the coming years, Latvijas Pasts plans to supplement and improve the parcel network, automate and modernize customer service and service sales processes in post offices, as well as provide automated transportation solutions in the mail processing and sorting complex, connecting various mail processing locations as efficiently as possible.
