Woodworking Group “Latvian Veneer“will study the possibilities of industrial production of betulin from birch processing by – products, according to the announcement published on the website of the Procurement Monitoring Bureau.

Betulin is a crystalline white organic substance found in birch, and it is because of this substance that the birch trunk is white. This biologically active compound is widely used in medicine worldwide as a skin healing agent, as well as in cosmetics.
The company plans to spend 105,000 euros on the implementation of industrial research, and it also plans to use it European Union co-financing from the Funds. The research is planned to be conducted by the end of 2018. Applicants can apply for the research to perform the research until June 22 of this year.
The company was informed that the project envisages research into the methodology of preparation of the betulin raw material – birch wood, the technological process of processing and the quality and further application of betulin obtained under industrial conditions.
Although the by-products generated in the course of daily production – sawdust, shavings, cuttings, wood chips, etc. – are already rationally used and most of them are also exported, the company is interested in expanding the application of by-products.
Until now, betulin has not been obtained industrially in Latvia.
As reported, the turnover of the group “Latvijas Finieris” last year was 196.502 million euros compared to 194.137 million in 2014, while the group’s profit was 12.763 million euros compared to 15.022 million in the previous year.
Last year, the Group invested 42.3 million euros in development, and in the coming years it is planned to invest even more in the implementation of a multi-year development program – rapid growth in products and automation, regional development in the Baltics.
JSC “Latvijas Finieris” was founded in 1992, the share capital of the company is 46.473 million euros. At the end of last year, the group employed 2,521 people.
“Latvijas Finiera’s core business is the production, sale, product development and related services of birch plywood. Other significant activities of the group are the sale of board materials, forestry and logging, as well as the production of synthetic resins and phenolic films.
