Latvian Useins Bolts: Rubik’s Cube and ‘Netflix’ Star Felix Zemdegs

Felix went to his first world championship in 2011 at the age of fifteen. Even then, admirers of talent asked him for autographs and invited him to take photos together. Either way, a year ago he had become the first person to solve five cubes at an average speed of less than ten seconds. In “Kuber”, Felix was compared to the legendary Jamaican sprinter Juseinu Boltu. Sounds exaggerated? But try to imagine – every time the cube is disassembled by a computer program, so that everyone has the same starting position. Each time he sees a cube with a different mix of colors in front of his eyes, as it can be arranged in more than 43 quintillions (that is, one with eighteen zeros) in different ways.

Zemdegs has set 121 world records and won fourteen world champion titles in various categories. In the most prestigious category – the classic three-layer Rubik’s Cube – he still holds the world record in terms of average speed. He has solved five cubes with an average time of 5.53 seconds. He has a personal record for assembling one cube in 4.16 seconds, but it was beaten a few years ago by the Chinese Yushen Du (3.47 complaints). By the way, Felix has had an average speed record since 2010 (then – 9.2 seconds), not counting the period in 2017, when it was “borrowed” by Maks Parks for a couple of months.

Does Felix still have the appetite to set new records and titles? He makes no secret of the fact that today he has less desire and motivation than three or four years ago. The guy is no longer hungry to beat a record or win matches at all costs, but he still likes to exercise and take part in competitions. Despite the fact that these are usually stressful days. It can also be appreciated in the already mentioned film “The Speed Cubers”, which revealed the human side of the participants, which, according to Felix, is of great importance. He admits that due to the great tension, he mourned at the end of each world championship.

“One day I would like to win another world championship, but it will be very difficult to do,” Felix reveals in a conversation with MVP.
