Latvian schools with the best results in optional exams have been named

This year, the highest results in the centralized chemistry exam were achieved at Rēzekne State 1st Gymnasium, where the average grade of one student is 93.3%, and at Saldus Secondary School, where a student obtained 92.7%. At RTU Secondary School of Engineering, where 24 students took the chemistry exam, they managed to get 87.2% of the results and the fifth place according to the average indicators.

On the other hand, the lowest results in the chemistry exam were achieved in JG Herder’s Riga Grizinkalns Secondary School, where one student who received 17.3% chose to take the exam, and in Smiltene Technical School, where the average score of two students is 18.7%.

In biology, the highest results were achieved this year in Rudzāti Secondary School, where one examiner scored 86.7%, as well as one student of Daugavpils 12th Secondary School scored 81.3% in the exam. Also at Ernst Glika Alūksne State Gymnasium, one student had chosen to take an exam in biology and obtained 77.3%, while the average grade of eight students at RTU Engineering Secondary School was 75.3%.

The lowest results in the biology exam were registered at Riga Secondary School No. 65, where one student chose to take the exam, who obtained 16.7%. The second lowest result was recorded in Ilguciems Secondary School, where the average result of two students is 19.3%, followed by Vidzeme Technology and Design Technical School, where the average performance of ten examiners is 20.1%.

The highest average achievements in physics are for Daugavpils 10th Secondary School, where one student managed to get 91.2%, while the second place was managed for a student of Riga 53rd Secondary School, who obtained 89.9% in the exam. The third highest results are for two students of Vabole Secondary School, whose average grade in the exam is 86.8%.

At the same time, the lowest results in the physics exam were found in VSIA “Riga Tourism and Creative Industry Technical School”, where one student had chosen to take the exam, who earned 12.2% in the exam. The second worst result was registered at Kandava Agricultural Technical School, where the average performance of eight students is 13.4%.

In turn, the highest achievements in the history of Latvia and the world this year are for Jēkabpils State Gymnasium, where the average results of two examiners are 93.9%, and for Rudzāti Secondary School, where one student also obtained 93.9%. In third place according to the average examination indicators is Jelgava Secondary School of Technology, where one student who scored 93.4% chose to take the exam, and in fourth place Riga Secondary School No. 93, where one student scored 91%.

The lowest results in the Latvian and world history exam were registered at Zaļenieki Commercial and Craft Secondary School. There, five students chose to take this exam, with an average performance of 24.2%. In the second place is the place of implementation of Daugavpils Construction Technical School education program “Dagda”, where the average evaluation of 26 exam writers is 25.5%, while in Kandava Agricultural Technical School Cīrava structural unit the average evaluation of 12 students is 26%.

LETA has already reported that primary school graduates were exempted from taking state examinations this year, however, in order for students to start their work and test their state language skills, students of the minority education program were offered to take the Latvian language exam of their choice. This opportunity was used by 1681 students.

The highest results in this exam were for a student of Liepāja 7th Secondary School, who scored 86.2%, while a student of Riga Ukrainian Secondary School managed to score 84.9%. The third highest result is for Daugavpils Technology Secondary School-Lyceum, where the average result of four examiners is 84.3%.

The lowest exam results were registered in Riga Lastādija primary school, where the average result of ten students is 25.2%, as well as in the private secondary school “Norma” one exam taker has obtained 29.7%.

It has already been reported that this year the results of students in the centralized examinations have not changed significantly compared to last year, however, the performance of students in the compulsory examinations is a few percentage points higher than in previous years, VISC told LETA.

Compared to last year, the average performance of students has improved by eight percentage points in the centralized exam in English, reaching 70%. In English, this is the highest result since 2009. The results have also increased in French, where the highest figure has been reached since 2009. In 2019, the average performance of students in the French language exam was 69%, however, this year the average results of students reached 75%.

The average results have also improved by three percentage points in German, where the average result of students has increased to 74%, which is the highest average performance since 2009.

It should be noted that this year the improvement in the results is also observed in the mathematics exam. LETA has already reported that the average score of students in the centralized exam in mathematics last year continued to fall, reaching the lowest level in the last decade. This year, the average result has risen by three percentage points to 35%.

At the same time, the center emphasized that comparing the results of the examinations over the years should take into account that the Covid-19 pandemic had partly changed the content of the exam, the students completed the exams on special answer sheets that had not been available in previous years.

A more detailed statistical analysis of exam results will be available in September this year.

The VISC noted that today 18,800 centralized examination certificates were issued to education authorities for young people who took centralized examinations for general secondary education in the basic term. This year, in order to receive a certificate of secondary education, students had to take an exam in Latvian, mathematics and, optionally, one foreign language.

On average, 14,000 students took the compulsory exams. 14,064 students took the exam in Latvian, 14,383 in mathematics, 12,340 students had chosen to take English, 1,784 in Russian, 37 in German and six in French.

The replacement of foreign language exams with a test organized by an international testing institution was used by 274 learners. VISC reminded that this year the students did not have to take the elective exams, however, there are no significant changes in the number of elective centralized examiners. In the history of Latvia and the world, 4192 students passed the exam, in biology – 1125, in physics – 898, while in chemistry – 548.
