The Latvian women’s basketball team will start the qualifying tournament of the 2021 European Championship against Germany on Thursday in Riga, where the outcome of the game will be very important for both teams in the fight for at least the second place in the group. The head coach of the Latvian national team Mārtiņš Gulbis said in an interview on Latvian Television that the team will be ready for the game and will take into account the possible tactics of the opponents.
Both Latvia and Germany previously played two games in the qualifying group and are in an identical situation after the loss to Croatia and the victory over Northern Macedonia.
The coach of the Latvian national team Gulbis described the German national team as a relatively new team with long basketball players, which could put pressure on the small players of the home team. The goal of the opponents could be to knock the small player of the Latvian national team out of balance and shuffle the cards to the hosts of the field.
“We are trying to prepare mentally for it,” Gulbis emphasized. “Of course, we do not know fully what awaits us [pretiniecēm] is a new coach [Volts Hopkinss], he has not played any game at the helm of the German national team. “
Coach Gulbis believes that basketball players will be ready for the game and knows for what purpose they have joined the national team. “I want to see an energetic and very nice team fighting for each other,” Gulbis added.
The Latvian national team has all the best – this time it includes four “TTT Rīga” ladies, but the other eight basketball players represent foreign clubs. On Wednesday, it became known that Kate Krēsliņa, a player of the Belgian championship team “Castors Braine”, will be able to help the TTT team in the first Euroleague race.
The Latvian national team has spent several days in the so-called “bubble” – even in isolated trainings, balls are often disinfected. The game against the ladies trained by the Swan in Germany must be prepared within three days. The situation is also identical for opponents.
The remaining games in the group will continue on Saturday, when the Latvian national team will compete with Croatia, while the opponents of the Northern Macedonia national team will be Germans. The tournament will take place in an “bubble” of epidemiological security, so spectators are not allowed to enter the hall due to restrictions.
The game of Latvian and German state units will be broadcast live on Thursday at 19.30 will be able to see LTV7 and replay.lv.
