Latvia has dropped to 16th place among EU and EEA countries in terms of Covid-19 incidence

Due to the deteriorating epidemiological situation in most European countries, Latvia has fallen to 16th place in the past two weeks among the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries with the highest levels of Covid-19 infection, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control ( Data collected by the ECDC).

Last week, Latvia was in 12th place, before that – in fifth place, but in the middle of June, Latvia even had the highest incidence of Covid-19 in the EU.

ECDC estimates of the situation in the previous two weeks from 28 June to 11 July show that the cumulative morbidity per 100,000 population in Latvia has decreased to 36.12 cases. Until the beginning of this week, the 14-day infection rate was higher than in Latvia in Cyprus, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Greece, Ireland, Denmark, Malta, Liechtenstein, Belgium, France, Finland, Norway and Estonia.

The highest incidence rate is currently in Cyprus at 1,068 cases per 100,000 population, and the lowest in Poland at 3.1 cases per 100,000 population.

In Estonia, the infection rate per 100,000 population has risen to 39.5 cases in the last two weeks, and in Lithuania to 20.6 cases, according to ECDC data.

However, although the level of infection with Covid-19 in Latvia has decreased, the 14-day mortality rate with diagnosed Covid-19 has slightly increased and was 17.8 cases per million population at the end of the previous week. Therefore, Latvia is again in the 2nd place among the EU and EEA countries with the highest mortality.

The highest mortality with diagnosed Covid-19 per million population in the past two weeks has been in Romania alone. The corresponding figure is 7.16 in Lithuania and 0.75 in Estonia.

Latvia, together with the other Baltic States, is also located in the green area of the travel warning card created by ECDC, which indicates to travelers a low risk of Covid-19.

Most of Europe’s regions are currently in the green zone.-

Only Cyprus, as well as several regions in Spain and the Netherlands, are currently in the dark red zone, which indicates a high level of risk for travelers. The red zone includes Portugal, Malta, the rest of Spain and the Netherlands, as well as Greece, Belgium and Denmark. The orange zone is Ireland, as well as a number of regions in Greece, Belgium, Croatia, France, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

The Travel Alert Card is designed to make it easier for travelers to understand the level of infection in different parts of Europe.
