Latvia and Estonia were hit by the shock wave of the Tonga volcano eruption

In the evening of late Saturday, January 15, and early Sunday, January 16, Japan was hit by a tsunami, according to the Meteorological Bureau of Japan. Weather forecasters in Estonia report that a volcanic shock wave has also affected Estonia and its neighbors, including Latvia.

The Pacific island nation of Tonga issued a tsunami warning across the country on Friday, January 15, following an underwater volcanic eruption on Friday, forcing people to move to higher areas.

The submarine Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano has been active since November last year and has been causing ash, steam and gas to erupt within a 20-kilometer radius since Friday. The loud noise was also heard more than 800 kilometers from Fiji, officials said.

The eruption came just hours after the tsunami warning was lifted last Friday.

“Some time ago, the eruption of the Tonga volcano spread across Estonia. This can be seen from the barometric pressure data – the barometric pressure suddenly increased and then decreased. “There is such a push inside all the stations, even in the stations of neighboring countries, including Latvia,” a forecaster said in the Estonian media.

The tsunami hit Japan late Saturday evening and early Sunday morning, resulting in waves of up to three meters high, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said a few hours after the eruption of a huge underwater volcano in Tonga. Saturday, at At 23.55 local time, a tsunami hit the island of Amami Oshima in the far south, followed by a small tsunami in other parts of Japan’s Pacific coast. Shortly after midnight, there was a tsunami of up to 0.9 meters on the island of Hokkaido and in the prefectures of Kochi and Wakayama.

The U.S. National Weather Service also issued tsunami warnings from California to Alaska, predicting waves of up to two feet (60 centimeters) high, strong currents and floods off the coast. “Move away from the beach in these areas, leave the ports and marinas,” the warning said.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, the tsunami is currently being observed in Hawaii, but no damage has been reported, and only minor floods have occurred in the islands.

Other Pacific countries have also warned of the tsunami, including New Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu, Australia and Chile.
