In 2021, insurance companies and the Latvian Motor Insurers’ Bureau (hereinafter – LTAB) together made decisions on the payment of MTPL indemnities in the amount of EUR 54.25 million. Last year, the historically highest amount of the average MTPL remuneration was reached – 1357 EUR.

In 2021, the total number of road traffic accidents reported to insurers (hereinafter – RTA) was 33754. Of all RTAs reported to insurers, 93.2% occurred in Latvia, but 6.8% – abroad. 65.6% of RTAs were recorded with the agreed notification protocol (including almost 11% electronically in the LTAB OCTA mobile application), but 34.4% of accidents were recorded by the traffic police.

Last year, insurance companies and LTAB made decisions on the payment of indemnities in the amount of EUR 54.25 million. In 2021, the average insurance indemnity for a road traffic accident also increased, which was 1357 EUR. “The average salary has been growing steadily for several years in a row. For example, in 2017 the average remuneration was 994 EUR, a year later it exceeded 1000 EUR, and last year it reached the historically highest mark, ”says Jānis Abāšins, Chairman of the Board of LTAB, adding that the increase in the average remuneration is expected to continue in the future. and rising prices for medical services.

Insurers have reimbursed the most for the damage caused to the vehicle (75.1%), victims (11.1%) and state and local government institutions for the treatment of RTA victims, maintenance in medical institutions, as well as for paid benefits (6.6%).

Of the funds received by insurers for the sale of MTPL policies, EUR 1.59 million will be used for the prevention of traffic accident prevention measures. “As in previous years, these funds will be used to implement the activities of the Road Traffic Safety Plan 2021-2027, which envisages a reduction in the number of people killed and seriously injured in road traffic accidents by 35% compared to 2020,” explains J. Abāšins. , adding that insurers have earmarked € 9.49 million for this purpose over the last five years.
