Large rescue operation for Dutch tourist on Argentinian mountain

The Dutchman was climbing with three other women when things went wrong. They were found by a guide who could call rescue teams through an alarm system, writes the La Nacion newspaper.

The rescuers had to carry the victim on a stretcher down steep and dangerous mountain paths. That lasted two days. Along the way they had to spend the night in an emergency camp. The aid was made difficult by harsh weather conditions.

Shin broken

The Dutch woman was eventually taken to a doctor’s post in El Chaltén. She had broken her shin.

Mount Fitz Roy is located in the southern Andes. The mountain is 3375 meters high and is known for its steep walls, making it extremely difficult to climb. The border between Argentina and Chile runs exactly over the top of the mountain.

According to La Nacion, mountain is very popular with tourists and there are many incidents every year. This is the first incident of this season, the newspaper writes.
