Large Indian Wells tennis tournament canceled by coronavirus; Bertens home

Bertens is now flying back to the Netherlands to await developments regarding the continuation of the Miami tournament, which starts on Tuesday 24 March.

“It is likely that that tournament will not take place either,” responds Elise Tamaëla, the coach of Bertens. “It is very unfortunate and bizarre, but there was no possibility to continue this tournament (Indian Wells, ed.).”

“They wanted to try it without spectators, but due to the declared state of emergency this was not allowed by the province. We cannot do much with it and wait for further decisions. There is still a lot of uncertainty.”

“Sunshine Double”

The Indian Wells tournament and the Miami Open together form the ‘Sunshine Double’. The two Masters tournaments are played one after the other and are popular with players due to the good climate and excellent facilities. It is unclear whether the tournament in Miami can start on 25 March.

Indian Wells attracted more than 475,000 spectators in 2019. The ‘fifth grand lamb’ has seventeen million dollars in prize money.
