Lamine Yamal: The Rising Star of FC Barcelona

A star has been born in Can Barça. One of those that does not need to score a goal to shine with its own light and turn off the rest of the constellations that have arrived at the Camp Nou from London. Tottenham threatened to take the Joan Gamper when with ten minutes to go before the final whistle they won 1-2 and were fully established on the pitch. What the English team did not have was the supernova called Lamine Yamal. She replaced Eric García in an attempt by Xavi, as desperate as it was effective, to reverse the game.

Yamal, who has not yet signed his first professional contract, only needed a minute to unravel the defensive framework that was costing the Catalans so much. He rode down the right wing, an area where Barça turned its game around from the Spaniard’s entrance, to assist Ferrán Torres. Later he participated in the two plays that ended in a goal, showing off his main virtue: the overflow in one against one. Lamine Yamal shone on a stage in which the greatest star in the history of Barça had previously done so: Leo Messi. The Argentine, in his debut as a starter, impressed the Camp Nou and Juventus, whose defense was overwhelmed to stop all his endless mischief. That happened 18 years ago, when Yamal, the current protagonist, was not even born. “He’s a talent, we have to measure the boy, but it’s wonderful to see him participate with this impudence and self-confidence,” Xavi said after the match.

Yamal’s irruption occurs at a time when the Barca fans are in need of idols and he meets all the requirements. He has great potential, a blessing from Xavi and he has trained at La Masía. “He is a player who can help us because he is very talented. He has personality, the last pass, he is strong… he can mark an era at the club. Without any fear I put it on the list. We are happy with him. He has very good football conditions. I have spoken with him and he is happy. I am hallucinated with the unconsciousness of those who go up now, without any pressure, they dare everything, they are not afraid of anything ”, adds Xavi.

Lamine’s claim to fame has been brewing for years. In the azulgrana youth system, when he was old enough to be a cadet, he competed all season in Juvenil A, superior category. And, at just 15 years old, Xavi made him debut last season in the League during the final stretch against Betis against a Camp Nou that received him with a standing ovation. That spring night he became the youngest footballer to debut with the Barça shirt in the League.

With a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother, Yamal has before his eyes a good opportunity to gradually enter the dynamics of the subsidiary and perhaps the first team. With Dembélé very close to leaving transferred to PSG and the Barça club without the financial muscle to make a large investment in a substitute, Lamine emerges as a possible alternative. “He is a boy with super special qualities. If he continues with this attitude he will go a long way”, concluded the Barcelona technical secretary, Jordi Cruyff. “When I was 15 years old, I used to play in my neighborhood team,” summarized Raphinha. Time will mark the future of Lamine Yamal who, accustomed to rapidly burning stages, and taking into account Xavi’s devotion to youth players, it would not be surprising if he enjoyed minutes this season with the first team.
