Lakehead University’s School of Nursing Opens New Laboratory Facility.

Officially opened Tuesday, the new lab is housed in a former forestry classroom in the Braun Building on the Lakehead campus in Thunder Bay.

The lab has 10 beds, each of which has a mannequin for students to practice their skills, such as caring for wounds or giving injections.

This lab will accommodate all incoming first years and current second years as they progress through the programsays Ms. Hamilton.

« The equipment in this laboratory is more modern, which will allow a smooth transition to practice […] the IV pumps are the same as those used in the hospitals where we operate. »

A quote from Erin Hamilton, third-year nursing student at Lakehead University

This new laboratory ensures that students can practice learned skills in a safe environment where they are allowed to make mistakesargues Ms. Hamilton.

You will have time to practice your skills several times before putting them into practice during internships at the hospitalshe said before adding that this only adds to the plethora of experiences you will have when entering the job market.

The same is true for Kristen Jones-Bonofiglio, Director of the School of Nursing Sciences, for whom this technology allows to help our nursing students anticipate and ease their anxieties a little about what they might be going through, so that they can fully engage once they enter the clinical fields.

« It’s really important to us to have these large lab spaces for our students so they can have individualized practice, just two students per bedside. »

A quote from Kristen Jones-Bonofiglio, Director of the School of Nursing

Ms. Jones-Bonofiglio is also a graduate of Lakehead’s nursing program, but she sees how teaching has changed since her time there: there was a nursing lab when I graduated, and I remember using oranges to practice giving injections.
