In April, the number of unemployed in the Würzburg district of the employment agency rose by more than a fifth compared to March to around 8,500 people affected. The previous year’s figure is thus exceeded by more than 30 percent. The unemployment rate rose to 2.8 percent. In April of the previous year it was 2.2 percent. A higher April quota was last recorded in 2016. “The spread of the corona virus has left clear traces in the economy and on the job market within a very short time and there is no end in sight,” says Stefan Beil, head of the Würzburg Employment Agency, describing the current situation. Business closures, production downtimes and order slumps have led him to the fact that around 4500 advertisements for short-time work in the Würzburg employment agency have been received since March. In total, the advertisements for short-time work refer to around 57,600 people. That is more than a quarter of all employees in the Würzburg agency district who are subject to social security contributions. Information about how many employees were actually in short-time work is only available with a time delay, reports the employment agency. Corona closes labor market in Schweinfurt The corona crisis and the associated restrictions also left clear marks on the labor market in and around Schweinfurt. Unemployment skyrocketed at the beginning of the second quarter. In April around 9,100 people were registered as unemployed. That was around 1100 people more than in the previous month. The unemployment rate rose from 3.2 percent in March to 3.7 percent in April. Unemployment rose by around a quarter compared to the previous year. “Already planned reinstatements have to be postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic,” says Thomas Stelzer, head of the Schweinfurt employment agency. In system-relevant areas, such as food retailing, healthcare and IT, there is an increased need for workers, according to Stelzer. A third of the companies reported short-time working in Schweinfurt Since the beginning of this year, companies in the Schweinfurt employment agency district have received around 3,600 short-time adverts (as of April 27). This corresponded to around a third of the approximately 11,000 companies in the region. Mainfranken is part of a nationwide development. Germany’s companies had registered short-time work for 10.1 million people in the Corona crisis by April 26. The Federal Employment Agency announced this record value. This far exceeded all forecasts by economists.
