La Maif will reimburse car insurance contributions

The Niort insurer Maif will give its members a little more than 100 million euros to take into account the collapse in the number of car accidents, in a context of containment to fight against the spread of the coronavirus.

“La Maif decides to take part in the collective solidarity effort by a very strong gesture” with the “reimbursement of auto insurance contributions up to just over 100 million euros, redistributed to 2.8 million members (Maif insured) for around 3.6 million vehicles, “said the insurer in a press release.

– 80% claim

Since the start of containment, the number of automobile claims has indeed dropped by almost 80% compared to a so-called “normal” year, said a spokesman for the insurer.

At the insurer level, this 100 million euros represents almost a year of net profit. In 2018, Maif had indeed posted a net profit of around 127 million euros.

For insurer members, this decision represents a gain of around 50 euros per insured vehicle, according to the spokesman.

The insured will be able to keep this sum, but the insurer encourages them to “repay this sum in the form of a donation” via a dedicated platform for supporting hospitals (Fondation Hôpitaux de Paris-Hôpitaux de France), research (Institut pasteur) or solidarity (Secours populaire).

In addition, the insurer specifies that the majority of its employees are partially unemployed but that it has chosen to maintain wages at 100% without resorting to state aid, a measure which represents a cost for the business of around 15 million euros.
