La Jornada – The best gift in the world is to give people the energy of music, says duet Alchimyst

David Hoerhager and Julien Descamps are the two people behind the project of psy trance Alchimyst, whose music has been supported by figures such as Armin van Buuren, as well as having played at festivals such as Tomorrowland or Dreamstate.

However, despite their recent success, diyéis They didn’t start producing music because they wanted to become famous. “For us it was more like this is very cool. And, being something nerd, you get the program on the computer and you start picking things up and you think: ‘this is good,’ ”Descamps said in an interview.

The duet met in Switzerland, where Hoerhager is originally from. A mutual friend, whom Descamps had come to express his admiration, recommended that he contact David. After talking on the phone, they learned that what they both wanted to do was very similar and began to work together. They recorded songs on various labels, including Van Buuren’s, with the idea that this would reach different audiences, and their project began to grow.

Although they have been able to continue working almost normally during the pandemic, “we are used to being alone in a studio for weeks and weeks. So for us it is normal not to go out ”, explained Julien; electronic music producers also miss public performances.

“For us it is our happy place. If we can give our music to an audience and they give us their energy back, it is the best gift anyone can give. It is like an energy transaction. The public gives us the energy and we give them the music, which is the energy we put into it, every time we make a song we put energy into it and then we give it and it no longer belongs to us. It is the greatest gift in the world, it is beautiful ”, explained Descamps.

To try to supply this energy exchange, the diyéis decided to open a YouTube channel that has become one of the largest in music psy trance. From its social networks, Alchimyst has been broadcasting online from time to time. “It’s not the same because you don’t have that physical contact with someone, but you still have some gratification when you see all the comments that come in. Every time they tell us how the music makes them feel, or that they’ve been going through a bad time, it’s still gratifying for us to be able to do something, ”Descamps described.

As part of those efforts, the duet has also been doing interviews with other diyéis. “It’s our way of giving something back to those who gave us something when we were starting out,” he pointed out about the less well-known colleagues who usually invite.

“Like a sanctuary”

For both David and Julien electronic music has been “like a sanctuary. I’m listening trance since I was very young. Being in Europe this was what I was exposed to ”, said the diyéi, who was born in Belgium and moved to the United States while still a minor.

In this type of music, both producers have known how to find happiness. “Even through difficult times in our lives, when nothing was going right, or we had personal problems, we always had music. And it made us feel happy, comfortable and like an escape ”.

In its first rave As a spectator, Julien felt at home, “because everything was pure energy and nobody cared about anything other than the music and they were all so friendly, I guess there were no egos there, it was a very hippie scene.”

From the therapeutic sensation that music psy trance It also provokes the need to continue composing and publishing songs. MOVE, his most recent single, was released with his followers in mind. “People are struggling, they are depressed, sad, they need an escape; if we didn’t launch it now it would have been selfish, because there is a whole world that needs contact, hope and music, “he said.

MOVE, composed during the pandemic, it was made together with Coexist Y Jasmine Knight. The collaboration comes from the idea of mixing two different styles. “If you only work with people who do the same thing as you, you are not taking the music anywhere, it will sound the same as what you already do, but if you do it with someone who does something completely opposite to you, a fusion will emerge in a midpoint that is new, unique and fresh, and those have been our best works “, said the diyéi Belgian-American.

The duo hope to release the album they are a part of. MOVE by the end of the year and, if possible, he hopes to travel again to play again. Alchimyst is expected to visit Mexico later this year.
