Kurdistan authorities reach preliminary deal with Baghdad to resolve oil tensions

MADRID, 15 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The prime minister of the semi-autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan, Masrur Barzani, announced on Sunday a series of preliminary agreements with the Iraqi government to resolve a series of pending issues, including friction over the division of the oil business.

The tension between the Iraqi central government and the Kurdistan authorities rebounded in February last year when the Supreme Court of Iraq declared the law in force until now that guaranteed Kurdish autonomy over its deposits “unconstitutional”.

Since then, the Kurdistan Regional Government has repeatedly appealed the court’s ruling.

Barzani communicated this Sunday to his Council of Ministers the success of his visit last Wednesday to Baghdad, in which he also discussed the issue of the quota reserved for the Kurds in the country’s federal budget.

Shortly after taking office in October last year, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Al Sudani reiterated his commitment to strengthen relations between Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan through a new framework for constitutional collaboration to “resolve disputes that take too long pending time”.
