Kunsthaus Dresda – NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST: Spider strategies

contemporary culture in Bihac, Warsaw, Beirut And Dresden it acts in a space dominated in different ways by existential problems, economic pressures to survive and the negotiation of concepts of life. How is it possible to create relevance and culturally survive in extreme conditions?

Together with the participating artists and curators, lectures, time for discussions and meals together explored this aspect third weekend as part of the Northeast-Southwest artistic and institutional strategies of rapprochement and creation of contact zones within societies and the action (and survival) of art beyond the classic constitution of an institution with four walls and a fixed address. Saturday night is formed CAMPUS concert the grand finale of the event.

Spider strategies

“We from Beirut Art Center we see ourselves as working spiders, slowly and diligently weaving webs around our art institution. That Beirut Art Center has had many conversations with younger and larger sister institutions about what people can do in the arts in times like the ones we are experiencing, how we can use resources, ideas and people in the service of social organizations that are already forming in the city, can gather. For us the question goes beyond what we can do, what and who we can be: we also think about how our creative and management processes must be rethought and modified. And we want to slowly implement these changes inside and outside the walls that make up our institution.

Guided by these reflections, in our curatorial contribution we would like to return to a concept and a practice with which we began to work, namely the practice of hosting. We would like to extend the invitation to work together in the Northeast Southwest to four smaller sister institutions, so that they in turn can contribute suggestions to the project. Starting from this local weaving of structures and in the spirit of an institutional kinship, we can make ourselves available as a mediation platform to strengthen the evolving local structures and initiate a series of conversations and exchanges with related entities in the region and beyond. “
