“We are already at the beginning of the fourth wave of COVID-19. For a week now, we have been seeing a steady increase in the number of infected people. Fortunately, not too fast, but it is a fact that last week there was a day with over 300 infected. I guess we’ll be over 500 this week. ” This was stated by Associate Professor Angel Kunchev in the studio of “Hello, Bulgaria”.

According to him, it is quite possible that in September there will be 3,000 infected people a day. “Exactly how many will be infected and how quickly they will come depends on many factors, starting with the rate of immunization, where we can not boast of who knows what success and go through compliance with measures, where even less we can praise with some success. “Unfortunately, we can expect more difficult than possible options,” he said.

Asked if lockdown in some form is being considered only for the unvaccinated, he commented: “From a medical point of view, this makes sense. The immunized are much more protected than the others. From a purely social point of view, however, I avoid commenting because society is very tired and reluctant to adopt new restrictive measures. I guess any government, whatever it is, will take that fact into account. ”

“I would recommend new and severe restrictions only as a last resort, because the accumulated fatigue and desire for a normal life are very strong. However, if the curve is too steep, if we have 3000-4000 infected per day, this is not impossible to happen. It all depends on the situation, “Kunchev added.

“The two-dose vaccine largely protects the person who made it. All the data on mortality and severe course show that it works very well. 95-96% of people in intensive care units are not vaccinated, “he added. He added that despite the fact that the vaccine at times reduces the chance of becoming infected and carrying the virus, the possibility of infection cannot be ruled out.

Those vaccinated against COVID-19 in Bulgaria exceeded one million

Asked whether it is necessary to give a third dose of vaccine to the first vaccinated, Angel Kunchev replied: “I think this will happen in the fall, but it should happen after permission from the European Medicines Agency and change the summary of characteristics of vaccines. I hope that this will mostly happen with new updated vaccines that are in line with the new options. It is set in the contracts of Bulgaria with the producers that this will happen in 2022 and 2023. ”
