Kristian Valen’s Terrifying Experience with Sunstroke: What You Need to Know

– Oh my God. I thought I had sunstroke before.

That would turn out to be wrong. Kristian Valen talks to Dagbladet over the phone, from the house in Marbella, Spain. On Monday, the thermometer shows 42 degrees in the garden, he says, and it will get worse in the next few days.

A couple of weeks ago there was also a heat wave in Spain. The nice day ended with Valen being bedridden.

– I blew up the beautiful, pink pelican that I should really stop using – but that’s a bit me, he says, laughing.

– I came in in the evening and became “very bad”, I didn’t understand what was wrong. That was the strangest thing. I was so sick. For a week I had to stay inside with air conditioning. It felt completely stupid.

Straight from Spain to the court: – Of course heavy

– Nauseous and dizzy

Now he has concluded that it was most likely sunstroke that affected him.

– You get a little scared, the pump starts beating enormously, you get nauseous, dizzy, search for words, and don’t understand anything. Then my fiancé said it could be sunstroke, says Valen.

He describes himself as a little hypochondriac, and started checking for other possibilities.

– I do read Dagbladet, and read an article about the fact that you should check your moles. So then I did it.

In retrospect, he says that it went well, despite being bedridden for a week.

– But if you don’t take it seriously and only have a week’s holiday, then the whole week is gone. I had put on sunscreen, but you don’t notice it – that’s what’s so scary.

Sunstroke/heat stroke

Condition with greatly increased body temperature, often above 40 degrees, usually combined with low blood pressure and reduced consciousness or unconsciousness.

Can be serious and require hospital treatment. First aid is cooling with a cold shower, or wrapping in cold, damp cloth. If the patient is awake, they should drink fluids.

In severe cases, muscle damage and impaired function of the liver, kidneys and the coagulation system can occur.

Manifests in headaches, convulsions and disturbance of consciousness. Low blood pressure can occur at the same time, due to dehydration and general dilation of blood vessels.

Can be prevented by avoiding strong heat without an adaptation period, ensuring plenty of fluid intake and extra supply of salt.

– Drink a bottle of liquor every day

Longing for bad weather

Now the comedian has learned from his mistakes and bought a hat – which doctors also recommend to prevent heat stroke. At the same time, Valen stays indoors on the hottest days.

– I am not allowed by my fiance to wear a cap, because I am no longer 18 years old. Even if everyone else does it here. So I bought myself a “grandfather hat” from a Cuban shop – that white “Casablanca hat”, which adds 25 years to my age. Then all you have to do is go and sit down with the 80-year-olds by the sea.

Next week Valen will have a show in Norway, so he will return home in a few days. Now he longs for rain, stiff gales and stiff prices.

– It sounds terrible to complain that it’s hot. But the sunstroke was terrifying and terrible. If I’m going to give any advice, it has to be don’t take any chances. Don’t mess with the sun and the heat.
