The Barcelona board believes De Jong’s contract from 2020 contains illegal details, and has consequently asked for it to be annulled. That’s what The Athletic writes.

In 2019, De Jong was ready for the Spanish big club from Ajax, but in 2020 he extended that contract by another two years until 2026. That contract was signed by the previous board of the club which was led by Josep Bartomeu, before they left in October 2020.

The current Barcelona board believe the old board involved illegal details in that contract and have asked the Dutchman to void it to return to the original terms of the contract in 2019, reports The Athletic.

They sent a letter to De Jong in mid-July informing him that they are in a position to open criminal proceedings to establish what happened when the contract was signed and to find out who was responsible.

The magazine further writes that the old board is convinced that the contract from 2020 is valid and that nothing illegal happened.

De Jong has been linked to Manchester United throughout the summer, but despite the fact that the Premier League club has had a bid accepted, De Jong does not want the transfer. Last week The Athletic reported that Chelsea had started concrete talks about the Dutchman.

The Spanish club is in dire need of funds to register players ahead of the upcoming season. They have brought in several big stars, including Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Jules Koundé and Andreas Christensen.

Barcelona play their first league game of the season at home against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.
