Kremlin Critic Alexei Navalny Dies in Russian Prison, Western Leaders Demand Putin to Take Responsibility

Jakarta

Authority Russia announced that the Kremlin’s most prominent critic, Alexei Navalny, had died in the Arctic prison where he was being held. Navalny’s death drew strong reactions from leaders of Western countries.

The leaders of this country are united in demanding the President Vladimir Putin to be responsible.

Reported AFP and Reuters, Saturday (17/2/2024), the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District said in a statement that Navalny (47) felt unwell after walking around in the area of the IK-3 prison complex in Kharp, which is 1,900 kilometers away northeast of Moscow.

It was stated that Navalny lost consciousness and died shortly afterwards. The penitentiary authorities also added that resuscitation efforts had been carried out on Navalny, but ended in failure.

Medics from Labytnangi City Hospital said they spent more than “half an hour” trying to resuscitate Navalny.

“Emergency doctors declared the prisoner dead. The cause of death is being investigated,” said the official statement from the prison management, referring to Navalny, as quoted BBC in his report.

Navalny’s wife, Yulia, told the Munich Security Conference that she did not believe her husband was dead because “Putin and his government… constantly lie”.

“But if this is true, I want Putin, all his cronies, Putin’s friends, his government to know that they will bear responsibility for what they did to our country, to my family, to my husband,” he said.

But leaders of Western countries, including United States (US) President Joe Biden, are demanding Putin to take responsibility for Navalny’s death. The following are various calls from leaders of Western countries:

President AS Joe Biden

“Make no mistake, Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death,” Biden said in a speech broadcast on US television from the White House.

“What happened to Navalny is another proof of Putin’s brutality. No one should be fooled,” he said.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz

Scholz recalled the moment he spoke to Navalny about the “great courage” that prompted him to return to Russia after recuperating in Berlin following his attempted poisoning several years ago.

“He has now paid for his courage with his life,” Scholz said.
