KPK Reveals Extortion Codes in Jakarta Detention Centers: 15 Suspects Detained

Jakarta

KPK revealed the existence of a number of codes in the practice of illegal levies or extortion at KPK detention centers. These codes are used to secure the operation of extortion in detention centers.

Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Investigation Director Asep Guntur said that prison extortion had occurred in a structured manner since 2019. At that time, the perpetrator was determined to act as a ‘headman’ who was tasked with distributing a sum of money from the prisoners.

“The task of the sub-district head is to collect and distribute a certain amount of money from detainees through the detainee coordinator (korting) at the three KPK branch detention centers,” said Asep in a press conference at the KPK building, South Jakarta, Friday (15/3/2024).

The position of ‘headman’ at the KPK branch detention center at Pomdam Jaya Guntur is held by the suspect Muhammad Ridwan (MR). Meanwhile, the suspect Mahdi Aris (MHA) acted as the ‘headman’ at the KPK branch detention center at the Red and White Building and the suspect Sopian Hadi (SH) acted as the ‘headman’ at the KPK branch detention center at the ACLC Building.

Asep said in practice detention center extortion at the Corruption Eradication Commission also known as korting. This activity was a collection of money from detainees carried out by a detainee and had been approved by the suspect Hengki (HK) as the ‘brain’ of the detention center extortion and Achmad Fauzi (AF) as the Head of the Corruption Eradication Committee (Karutan) of the Corruption Eradication Committee.

“The appointment of Korting is an initiative from HK which was continued by AF when he served as Head of the definitive KPK Branch Detention Center in 2022. The methods used by HK et al for prisoners include providing exclusive facilities in the form of accelerated isolation periods, services using cellphone and power banks, until the information is checked,” said Asep.

The results of the KPK investigation revealed that there was a code used by the perpetrators to carry out their extortion activities. These codes are known as bird cages to floods.

“HK et al in carrying out their actions used several terms or password “among them floods are interpreted as inspection information, bird cages and corn feed are interpreted as money transactions, and bottles are interpreted as cellphones and cash,” said Asep.

A total of 15 suspects in prison extortion have now been detained since today. Dozens of suspects were detained at the Polda Metro Jaya Detention Center.

“For the needs of the investigation process, the investigative team detained the suspects for the first 20 days starting from March 15 2024 to April 3 2024 at the Polda Metro Jaya Detention Center,” he concluded.
