Kosovar President overtaken by his past and by international justice

Hashim Thaçi, who led the KLA, is accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The sword of Damocles, suspended for years, has fallen. Hashim Thaçi, President of Kosovo since 2016, Kadri Veseli, his right-hand man and leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), as well as “other people”, are accused of «war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder, enforced disappearance, persecution and torture ”, committed against nearly 100 people during the 1998-1999 conflict with Serbia, and when they were guerrillas of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) guerrillas.

These are the first indictments released Wednesday by the Special Court for Kosovo, headquartered in The Hague. This court had been created in 2015 to investigate alleged crimes committed by the KLA, after the 2010 report by Swiss Senator Dick Marty for the Council of Europe, which had then revealed suspicions weighing on the Kosovar Albanian independence guerrillas .
