Korrontzi presents today at the Coliseum ‘Koplariak’, with lyrics by Xabier Amuriza

The well-known contemporary traditional music group Korrontzi presents today, at the Colosseum at 7:00 p.m., their latest work, ‘Koplariak’, in which it turns out to be their tenth album. This band has put music to the lyrics written by the well-known bertsolari Xabier Amuriza.

Now, they show the work done in a show that brings together showy choreographies of new traditional dance roots, and in which there is no shortage of new sounds created by Korrontzi and the collaboration of great musicians.

In its sixteen-year career, Korrontzi has become the showcase for Basque traditions around the world, making Basque, dance and Basque music known at the most important ‘World Music’ festivals. With this new work, the Basque quartet returns to its roots, giving the place it deserves to ‘koplagintza’ within traditional music.

“I use the copla, with its limitations, to sing any message of my own or on request”, says Xabier Amuriza

‘Koplariak’, recorded in full confinement from their homes, is composed of new compositions with the sounds that characterize the group, which accompany the lyrics created for this work, by Amuriza, improvisational poet in the Basque language, writer, researcher and musician. considered the great renovator of versolarism, who has not hesitated to collaborate with one of the most emblematic groups of Basque popular music.

A return to the roots

With this work they return to the roots, giving the place it deserves to ‘koplagintza’ within traditional music. It should be remembered that his work was selected as one of the 10 best albums according to the World Music Charts list. This ranking values world music records at an international level.

The CD offers 10 tracks: ‘Because She Was Beautiful’, ‘When I Was Married’, ‘Seasons’, ‘Salty Leeks’, ‘Laja Bodoa!’ ‘Mezobarri’, ‘Sailor’s Wife’, ‘Born to Live’, ‘My Dear Star’ and ‘Meridian in Greenwich’.

While the book, published in four languages (Basque, Spanish, French and English), has been written by Amuriza. To do this, she exposes her defense of the ‘copla’, a genre she has known very well since her childhood, since “a great-aunt of mine organized the pilgrimage with a simple tambourine, singing the couplets herself. By the way, he sold bread and wine and various homemade foods. A form of sustenance », explains Amuriza. «The copla is a short stanza. There is no discourse, as in versolarism. A poorly focused opinion on the mysterious logic of the verses still persists, which says that their function is to reinforce the verse. That somewhat confusing interpretation should be out of date. The elements are there, as in a painting, ”says Amuriza.

“Live and beautiful genre”

Amuriza ensures that the modern or traditional use of a lively and beautiful genre, such as the copla, depends on the concepts and the content. «For my part, as in this album, I use the copla, with its limitations, to sing any message of my own or on request. Of course, always trying not to cause any painful twist to such a charming aesthetic.

The formation is integrated on stage by Agus Barandiaran (trikitixas, main voice and txalapartas), Ander Hurtado de Saratxo (percussions and drums), Kike Mora (double bass and electric bass), Alberto Rodríguez (guitar, mandolin and octave mandolin) and César Ibarretxe, as the technician responsible for the live sound.

Tickets cost 10 euros and seven for holders of the Coliseoaren Laguna card.
