Knowing the main symptoms of stroke is crucial for emergency treatment; FAST sequence tracks facial, arm, speech, and time symptoms.

Strokes occur when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off, and because they are life-threatening, they must be treated as a medical emergency.

The sooner a person treats a stroke, the more likely they are to survive and recover.

To achieve this, it will be necessary to know the main symptoms of the condition, which can be ascertained using the FAST sequence, where the letters indicate: face (F), arms (A), speech (S), and time (T).

The NHS explains FAST as follows:

Face (F): The face is lowered on one side, the person may not be able to smile, or the mouth or eyes may droop.

Arms (A): The person may not be able to raise both arms and keep them raised due to weakness or numbness in one arm.

Speech (S): Speech is slurred or slurred, or the person may not be able to speak at all even though they seem awake. They may also have problems understanding what others are saying to them.

Time (T): It probably is time to call 911 immediately if you notice any of these signs or symptoms.

Besides these main signs of stroke, there are other symptoms to watch out for as well.

Beaumont Health noted that stroke can lead to changes in vision.

“If you have a stroke in the back of the brain, the visual field on one side of your vision will be severed,” Amanda Griffiths, a staff nurse on the neurosurgery team at Beaumont, explained.

There may also be loss of coordination, unsteady gait, and/or feeling dizzy. Some may experience a sudden onset of nausea and vomiting, or feel very tired.

Those who suffer a hemorrhagic stroke can develop a sudden, severe headache, which may also be the “only symptom” of the condition.

A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, usually as a result of high blood pressure.

Whereas an ischemic stroke, which is the most common, occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, leading to the death of brain cells.

These types of strokes are caused by a blockage or abnormality. High cholesterol and blood pressure are both risk factors for stroke.

“Most people are left-brain dominant, so strokes in the left side of the brain can be severe,” Griffiths said. “This dominant side of the brain is responsible for speech and understanding speech.” The dominant side is usually determined by which hand you use, so that the right side is dominant most often in left-handers, while the left side of the brain is dominant in all right-handers.

Additional symptoms of a stroke may include numbness, tingling, or loss of feeling on one side of the body.

People should tell their doctor if they think they may have had a stroke, especially if heart disease or aneurysms run in the family.
