KLB diphtheria Malang has made the Health Service (Dinkes) Malang City, East Java intensify Diphtheria Outbreak Response Immunization (ORI) immunization.

“From the recommendation of the East Java Provincial Health Office, ORI should be carried out in the form of vaccine administration in the Kedungkandang District area, targeting children aged 1-15 years,” said Head of the Malang City Health Office Husnul Muarif as quoted from Antara.

He said Malang City was designated as a diphtheria outbreak following a case that caused an eight-year-old child to die at the end of July 2023.

He revealed, the first appearance of diphtheria cases in Malang City occurred on June 15, 2023 where a boy was indicated to be exposed to the bacteria. Corynebacterium and after laboratory examination it was found positive for diphtheria. The patient was then treated and treated, but on July 25, 2023 the eight-year-old patient died.

After investigation, the child did not receive basic immunizations.

“An eight-year-old patient died on July 25, 2023. As for immunization status, there has not been confirmation from the family, so there have not been basic immunizations and neither have the programs,” he said.

With the findings of the diphtheria case, he continued, the Municipal Government of Malang held ORI immunization in Kedungkandang District, which consists of 12 sub-districts with a target of 43 thousand children aged 1-15 years.

Malang City Government has an immunization target of 95 percent in 2022, but only 84.9 percent has been realized. This could be one of the triggers for the emergence of diphtheria cases in the region. The status of the diphtheria outbreak in Malang City will be revoked if there are no new cases for three months. It is hoped that the status of the diphtheria outbreak in Malang City can be revoked in September 2023.
